What to do if Someone is Having a Seizure

  • Make the person comfortable and lie them down
  • Place clothing or a cushion under their head.
  • Stay with them
  • Remove them from imminent danger
  • DO NOT place anything in their mouth
  • DO NOT try to rouse the person – allow the seizure to take its course
  • Place the patient on their side once the seizure is over
  • Reassure the person after the seizure is over and explain what has happened.

There is generally no need to call an ambulance if all of the following requirements are met:

  1. If medical I.D. jewelry or cards says “epilepsy”
  2. If the seizure ends in under 5 minutes
  3. If consciousness returns without further incident
  4. If there are no signs of injury, physical distress or pregnancy.
