About Breast Cancer
What are the symptoms of Breast Cancer?
- A new lump or thickening in your breast or underarm
- A change in skin texture such as dimpling
- Flaky skin or redness around the nipple area
- Your nipple becomes inverted or changes shape
- Liquid discharge from your nipple
- Swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone
Breast Cancer Treatments
The best treatment for you will depend on:
- The size and grade of your tumour
- The type of breast you have
- What proteins/hormone receptors are on your cancer cells
- If the cancer has spread
Option 1: Surgery
Breast-Conserving Surgery – Surgery during which the part of the breast containing the tumour is removed
Mastectomy – Surgery where the whole breast is removed
Option 2: Radiotherapy
External Radiotherapy – Uses high energy rays to kill the cancer cells. It can be given instead of surgery or after surgery
Internal Radiotherapy – The radiation source is placed in or near your tumour for a very short time to kill the cancer cells.
Option 3: Systemic Therapy
Oral Medications – Taken over the course of 5 years. Depending on the type of medication it will either block the effect of estrogen or stop the body making estrogen.
Chemotherapy – A treatment using drugs to kill cancer cells given by IV infusion.
