Prostate Cancer Treatments
The best treatment for you will depend on
- The stage and grade of your cancer
- Your PSA level
- If you have urinary symptoms or not
- The size of your prostate gland
Option 1: Active Surveillance
Your doctor may recommend active surveillance which is a way of monitoring low-grade prostate cancer, rather than treating it right away. It is usually recommended when the cancer is slow-growing, no symptoms are occurring and the cancer is contained in a small area of the prostate.
Active surveillance involves having regular PSA tests, MRI scans and sometimes biopsies to check on the cancer. If these tests reveal the cancer may be growing, you will then discuss treatment options. Most of the time men do not need to get further treatment.
Option 2: Watchful Waiting
Watchful waiting is usually recommended to men who have health conditions that make other treatments unsuitable or to older men when the cancer is unlikely to affect their lifespan. The doctors will do PSA tests to keep an eye on the cancer over the long term. If the tests show the cancer is progressing, hormone medication is usually used.
Option 3: Surgery (Radical Prostatectomy)
Radical Prostatectomy involves the surgical removal of the prostate gland. It is an option when the prostate cancer is confined to the prostate.
Option 4: Hormone Therapy
Prostate cancer cells depend on testosterone to help them grow. Hormone therapy comes in the form of tablets or injections that reduce stops the body from producing the male hormone testosterone. Hormone therapy is used to treat and shrink advanced prostate cancer or alongside radiotherapy in early stages.
Option 5: Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy is an option when the cancer is confined to the prostate. You will usually have sessions 5 days a week for several weeks.
External Beam Radiation uses high energy x-ray beams to kill the cancer cells.
Brachytherapy (internal radiotherapy) works by putting a radioactive source into your prostate to kill the cancer cells
Option 6: Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is used to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
