About Erectile Dysfunction

How common is ED?

ED is a relatively common condition affecting men of all ages. Research in Ireland shows that one in three men have experienced difficulty getting an erection, while one in five experience ED regularly.

So, if you have ED you are not alone. Healthcare professionals are used to treating this condition and there is no reason to be embarrassed to talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?

ED is usually due to a physical cause, although psychological causes and some types of medication can also cause ED.

The most common physical cause of ED is when the small blood vessels that supply the penis during an erection become blocked or narrowed.  High cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes are some of the underlying health conditions that can cause this to happen and ED can sometimes be an early warning sign for these conditions.  That is why it is a good idea to talk to your pharmacist or doctor so they can assess your health.

How can ED be treated?

A few lifestyle changes could help reduce the symptoms of ED. These include:

  • Losing weight by eating healthy
  • Exercising regularly
  • Stopping smoking
  • Moderating alcohol intake
  • Reducing stress
