About Hair Loss
What are the causes of hair loss?
Hair loss is usually hereditary, meaning it is caused by your genetic makeup.
Other non-genetic causes of hair loss include
- Chemotherapy
- Underactive thyroid
- Overuse of streroids
- Scalp infections
- Poor diet (low iron)
- Stress & depression
How can hair loss be treated?
Treatments for hair loss are focussed on preventing loss as opposed to regrowing already lost hair.
There are two clinically validate approaches:
- Reducing levels of dihydrotestosterone with oral finasteride
- Improving blood flow in the scalp with topical minoxidil
Testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. DHT causes hair loss. Finasteride blocks the enzyme resulting in a lowering of DHT.
Minoxidil when used on the scalp in a foam or shampoo is stimulates hair growth. It is beleived to increase blood flow in the scalp, meaning that hair follicles get more nutrients.
