Casacol Expectorant Syrup is a sugar-free syrup that works as an expectorant and decongestant. It helps to loosen thick, sticky mucus and relieve congestion so that it is easier to cough up and clear from the chest and airways.

Casacol is used to treat:

  • Chesty coughs with thick mucus

  • Nasal and chest congestion associated with the common cold

  • Congestion and cough linked with bronchitis

It is suitable for adults and children aged 6 years and over.

Who should not take Casacol

Do not take Casacol Expectorant Syrup if:

  • You are allergic to methoxyphenamine, guaiphenesin, sodium citrate or any of the other ingredients

  • You have serious kidney problems or a condition called porphyria

  • You have high blood pressure, coronary thrombosis, an overactive thyroid, closed-angle glaucoma or difficulty passing urine

  • You are currently taking, or have taken in the last 10 days, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) used for depression or Parkinson’s disease

  • You are taking other sympathomimetic medicines such as some decongestants or certain medicines used for heart and circulation problems

  • You are taking any other cough or cold medicine containing similar ingredients

  • The person to be treated is under 6 years of age

Warnings and precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Casacol if:

  • You have heart disease or are taking medicines for heart problems or high blood pressure

  • You are taking digitalis (digoxin) or beta-blockers

  • You have been told you are intolerant to some sugars

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding – Casacol should only be used on medical advice in pregnancy or while breastfeeding

If you are taking, or have recently taken, any other medicines (including those bought without a prescription), check with your doctor or pharmacist before using Casacol.

Stop taking Casacol and seek medical advice if you experience chest pain, severe headache, fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty passing urine, rash, breathing problems, uncontrolled shaking or fits.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, Casacol should only be used on the advice of your doctor.

Always take this medicine exactly as described on the label or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Use the measuring spoon provided in the pack.

Adults and children over 12 years One or two 5 ml spoonfuls, 3 to 4 times daily.

Children 6 to 12 years One 5 ml spoonful, 3 to 4 times daily. Do not give more than 20 ml in total in any 24 hours. Always check with a doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare professional before use in children between 6 and 12 years. Important dosing information Do not take more than 4 doses in any 24-hour period. Do not exceed the stated dose. Treatment should not be continued for longer than 5 days. If symptoms persist, worsen or are accompanied by fever, chest pain, shortness of breath or wheezing, you should see your doctor. If you forget a dose, just take the next dose when it is due. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
